Alcorn State beats Jackson State 10-8 after offensive showdown
Lorman, Miss. — Jackson State’s offense produced eight runs, but it was not enough to overcome Alcorn State, which won 10-8 Tuesday afternoon. Madison McDowell took the loss after starting for the Tigers, who fell to 18-16 overall, according to school officials.
Jackson State’s batters showed offensive firepower, with Avelina Mclean going 1-for-1 with two RBIs and Isabella Rivera adding a double and an RBI. Thenya Kennedy contributed a hit and an RBI in four at-bats, along with a walk.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the first inning with two runs. Kennedy’s RBI single in the same inning made it 3-0. However, Alcorn State responded, and by the third inning, led 6-3. The Lady Braves extended their lead to 8-4 before Jackson State started to rally. In the sixth inning, the Tigers scored three runs to cut the deficit to 10-8 but could not close the gap further. Neither team scored in the seventh inning.
Jackson State’s most productive inning was the sixth, when it scored three runs. Kennedy and Zaria Keyes both stole four bases, helping the Tigers total 12 stolen bases in the game. The team’s pitchers faced 32 hitters, recording two strikeouts and allowing six walks. Mclean led the Tigers offensively, going 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Olivia Miller led Alcorn State with a 3-for-3 effort, including a home run and three RBIs. Alainah Felton pitched seven innings, allowing eight runs for the Lady Braves.
The Tigers will continue their road trip with a three-game series at Bethune-Cookman starting Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m., according to the school.
