Alcorn State Athletes Shine at Mississippi College Spring Classic
Several Alcorn State University student-athletes showcased their talents Saturday at the Mississippi College Spring Classic held at James E. Parkman Track in Clinton, Mississippi. The event served as a testing ground for the team as they prepare for the spring season, according to head coach Alonzo Banks.
Joe Coleman won the men’s 200-meter dash with a time of 21.45 seconds, while Jaden Gardner finished fourth in 21.51 seconds. On the women’s side, Sariah Magee clocked in at 11.89 seconds in the 100-meter dash, and Taliya Spurlock posted a 24.44 in the 200 meters. Myshell Hurse led the women’s 400-meter race with a winning time of 55.93 seconds, with teammate Sanaa Parker finishing third in 56.84 seconds, both times representing personal bests.
In field events, Jadan Miller took first in the men’s discus throw with a mark of 48.02 meters (157-06). Destinee Lanham finished third for the women with a throw of 30.31 meters. Taylor Brown won the women’s long jump with a distance of 5.64 meters (18-06), and Kaylin White placed third in the shot put with an 11.15-meter (36-07) effort. Myah Knowles highlighted the women’s triple jump with a second-place mark of 11.42 meters (37-05.75).
Alcorn’s relay teams also performed well. The men’s 4×100-meter relay finished first with a time of 40.75 seconds, and the women’s 4×100 and 4×400 relays each secured top spots, with times of 45.44 seconds and 3:50.35, respectively.
Coach Banks expressed satisfaction with the team’s efforts, noting that the athletes competed out of their usual positions and that the meet provided valuable insights for upcoming training. The Braves’ next outdoor meet is the Alumni Bulldog Relays hosted by Mississippi State University from March 26 to 28.
Full results include top performances across various events, with several athletes achieving personal bests, indicating a strong start for Alcorn State’s outdoor track and field season.
