Alcorn Softball Falls in Both Games of Doubleheader at Southern University

BATON ROUGE, La. — Alcorn State’s softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Southern University on Saturday at Lady Jaguar Field. Southern won the first game 9-4 and the second 10-7, extending the Braves’ losing streak in conference play.

In the opener, Abigail Mitchell hit a three-run home run in the first inning to set the tone for Southern. The Lady Jaguars scored early and often, building a 9-2 lead before Alcorn State mounted a late rally. Pitcher Chakirrious Parker went the distance, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out two to improve to 4-3 this season. Alcorn’s Chiara Olison hit her first home run of the year in the third inning, and Paris Thompson homered in the sixth for the Braves, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Southern’s early lead.

The second game saw Alcorn jump to a 7-5 lead but allow Southern to score five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior Mariah Morgan hit a three-run homer in the first inning, her third of the season, to give the Braves an early advantage. Southern responded with multiple home runs, including a two-run shot by Jaciee Massey and a two-run blast by Ariel Burton, who finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Aaliyah Zabala earned the win in relief, improving to 10-3, after allowing just one hit over 4.1 innings. Alcorn’s pitching struggled, with starter Miller allowing 10 runs on 14 hits in five innings.

Alcorn is scheduled to face ULM on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Monroe, Louisiana, as they look to rebound from the series sweep, according to team sources. Fans are encouraged to follow Alcorn State Sports on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for updates and behind-the-scenes content.
