Alcorn Softball Edges Miles in Final Game of HBCU Classic

Montgomery, Ala. — Olivia Miller pitched all seven innings to lead Alcorn State to an 8-2 victory over Miles on Sunday morning at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex. The game marked the conclusion of the HBCU Celebration Classic for both teams.

Trailing 2-0 after Miles scored in the top of the first, Alcorn responded with four runs in each of the first and second innings. The Braves capitalized on a single by Rajayla McBride, which drove in Sanai Salvant, who had walked to start the inning. Mariah Morgan followed with a triple to right, scoring McBride and Olivia Miller, giving Alcorn a 4-2 lead.

Alcorn added to its lead in the second inning, with Miller hitting a sacrifice fly to deep center, bringing home Morgan from third. McBride then sacrificed to bring Salvant home, making it 6-2. The Braves scored two more runs in the inning on Morgan’s sacrifice fly and a throwing error by Miles, closing out the scoring at 8-2.

Miles opened the scoring in the first inning, taking advantage of two walks and a passed ball. Kaylyn Cordero’s groundout scored Andrea Harris, and Cassie Willis’ sacrifice fly brought Jada Odom home, putting Miles ahead early.

Miller (1-1) earned the win, allowing two runs on four hits, with six walks and two strikeouts. Gracey Adkins (1-5) took the loss for Miles after pitching three innings, giving up eight runs (four earned) on five hits and a walk.

Alcorn is scheduled to return to the field Tuesday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader against Dillard University in its home opener.
