Alcorn Men’s Tennis Splits Doubleheader, Falls to Jackson State, Tops Mississippi Valley State
Alcorn State’s men’s tennis team opened Saturday with a 4-1 loss to Jackson State before rebounding with a 4-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State in a nonconference match, according to reports.
Jackson State claimed the win at JSU Tennis Center in Jackson, Mississippi, sweeping the doubles competition and winning three of four singles matches. The Tigers improved to 7-12 overall and finished 3-2 in SWAC play. The Braves ended their season at 4-18 and 1-4 in conference play.
Jackson State took an early lead by winning two of three doubles matches, including a 6-3 victory at the top spot. Alcorn’s only doubles win came from Sebastian Griffiths and Fabian Juarez, who defeated Federico Pickenstainer and Jhoan Vaquero 6-2.
In singles, Jackson State’s Ching Chang Chiu won at the top spot, clinching the match with a 7-5, 7-6 victory over Sebastian Griffiths. The Tigers also secured wins at positions three and five, with Federico Pickenstainer and Chen Hung-Yu winning convincingly.
Alcorn’s lone singles point came from Juarez, who defeated Fabrizio Fallas 6-0, 6-4. Two matches were unfinished when the outcome was decided, with Vaquero and Ayar leading in their respective matches.
Later Saturday, Alcorn defeated Mississippi Valley State 4-0 at Halls Ferry Tennis Courts in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The Braves secured the win through two forfeits and three completed singles victories, finishing the regular season with a 5-18 record.
The Delta Devils were unable to field a complete roster, resulting in forfeits in doubles and singles play. Alcorn is seeded fifth in next week’s SWAC Championships in New Orleans and will face third-seeded Jackson State on April 17 at 5 p.m., according to the team.
