Alcorn Men’s Tennis Hosts Lamar in Home Match
Vicksburg, Miss. — Alcorn State’s men’s tennis team hosts Lamar on Sunday at Hall’s Ferry Road Tennis Courts. The match begins at 10 a.m. The Braves, with a 3-2 record, are on a three-match winning streak but are still searching for their first Division I victory this season. Their recent wins have come against junior college opponents, and they defeated Mississippi Gulf Coast 4-3 in their home opener on Feb. 2, according to team sources.
Four Alcorn players are 3-2 in singles, including freshman Vicent Llobell Buigues from Alicante, Spain, who plays at No. 3. Sophomore Tomas Grime from Lancaster, England, is 2-2 at No. 4. In doubles, Buigues and Matthew Holl from Warriewood, Australia, are undefeated at 3-0 in No. 2 doubles.
Lamar enters the weekend with a 2-7 overall record, including a 1-3 mark in away matches. The Cardinals recently won two straight matches but fell 4-0 to North Alabama on Saturday in Vicksburg. Lamar is coached by Scott Shankles. Historically, Lamar is 30-0 all-time against Alcorn, with their last meetings on Jan. 25, 2025, in Beaumont, Texas, where Lamar swept both matches.
Last week, Lamar defeated Lubbock Christian 4-3, with Maxwell Lindstedt winning a three-set match at No. 1 singles. Monge Vicente also posted a straight-set victory at No. 4 singles. In their previous game, Alcorn beat Mississippi Gulf Coast, with Buigues, Grime, Juarez, and Jorge Prats Navarrete all earning singles wins. Prats Navarrete’s victory clinched the match for the Braves.
Alcorn’s head coach Kersten Vanem-Walker noted lineup adjustments before the match but emphasized her team’s resilience. The Braves aim to extend their winning streak and secure their first Division I victory of the season against Lamar.
