Alcorn Men’s Tennis Hosts Incarnate Word for Doubleheader Saturday
Alcorn State’s men’s tennis team will host Incarnate Word in a doubleheader Saturday at Hall’s Ferry Tennis Court in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The matches are scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., with the second match beginning 30 minutes after the first concludes, according to the school.
The doubleheader marks the third and fourth consecutive home matches for the Braves. Incarnate Word leads the all-time series 8-0 and defeated Alcorn in doubleheaders last season in Lorman, both matches ending 4-0. The teams have faced each other in doubleheaders for the past three years, reports the school.
Alcorn is seeking its first Division I win of the season. The team features four freshmen under interim head coach Kersten Vanem-Walker. Freshman Vicent Llobell Buigues is tied for the team lead with a 3-3 singles record, including a 2-3 mark at No. 3 singles. Sebastian Griffiths, also a freshman, has a 1-3 record at No. 1 singles.
The doubles team of Matthew Holl and Buigues has a 3-1 record this spring, all wins coming at No. 2 doubles.
Incarnate Word enters the doubleheader with an 0-2 record this season. Under coach Jonas Andersson, the Cardinals lost their last match 4-3 to Trinity (Texas) and previously fell 6-1 to second-ranked Texas. In their most recent outing, Alejandro Hernandez won at No. 1 singles.
Alcorn last played on Feb. 11, suffering a 7-0 loss to Lamar at Hall’s Ferry Tennis Courts. Buigues nearly forced a set tiebreak at No. 3 singles, but Lamar’s Stefano Chappuis won 7-6(5), 6-1. Fabian Juarez and Sebastian Griffiths also competed in singles for the Braves.
