Alcorn Men’s Tennis Beats Mississippi Gulf Coast 4-3 in Home Opener

Vicksburg, Miss. — Alcorn State’s men’s tennis team edged Mississippi Gulf Coast 4-3 Monday at Hall’s Ferry Road Tennis Courts. The Braves earned their third straight win and opened their 2026 spring season at home. The match served as an exhibition for the Bulldogs.

Mississippi Gulf Coast took an early lead with a doubles victory. Angel Hernandez and Ryland Buford defeated Alcorn’s Sebastian Griffiths and Fabian Juarez 6-1 on court one. Alcorn responded with a win at No. 2 doubles, as Matthew Holl and Vicent Llobell Buigues took down Santiago Enriquez and Connor Hartfield 6-3. MGCCC secured the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles, where Santiago Enriquez and Connor Hartfield beat Jorge Prats Navarrete and Tomas Grime.

In singles play, Llobell Buigues from Alcorn beat Jan Bako 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2. Tomas Grime followed with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Santiago Enriquez at No. 3. Fabian Juarez defeated Warren Hudson 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, and freshman Jorge Prats Navarrete clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Brennan McGlothin at No. 5.

Mississippi Gulf Coast won two singles matches, led by Angel Hernandez, who defeated Matthew Holl 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1. Cree Cunningham also secured a win for the Bulldogs, topping Jeremiah Jones 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6. Prior to the match, Alcorn Head Coach Kersten Vanem-Walker had to adjust her lineup.
