Alcorn Men’s Basketball Looks to Break Road Slump with Upcoming SWAC Games

Alcorn State’s men’s basketball team is seeking to halt a three-game road losing streak during its upcoming Southwest Athletic Conference schedule. The Braves travel to Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday and Mississippi Valley State on Monday for key league matchups, according to team officials.

Alcorn, which has lost three of its last four games, earned a 78-73 victory over Southern (La.) last Saturday in Lorman. The team currently holds a 4-17 overall record and a 3-6 mark in SWAC play, according to school data. The Braves’ last road win was a 64-62 game against Alabama A&M on Jan. 10.

The team has struggled offensively, averaging 66 points per game — second-lowest in the SWAC — while opponents score an average of 84.2 points. The Braves shoot 41.7 percent from the field, compared to opponents’ 51.1 percent, according to school statistics. Leading scorers Shane Lancaster and Tycen McDaniels have scored 240 and 215 points, respectively.

Lancaster leads the team with 42 three-pointers, followed by Davian Williams with 29 and Nick Woodard with 23. Point guard Jameel Morris has dished out 60 assists this season, ranking 13th in the conference. McDaniels leads in rebounding with 110 boards and has a team-high 22 blocked shots.

In the series, Alcorn holds a 20-9 advantage over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, having won the last 11 consecutive matchups, including a sweep last season. The last loss to the Golden Lions was a 73-62 game in 2019. The teams meet Saturday at UAPB’s H.O. Clemmons Arena.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff enters the weekend with a 9-13 overall record and a 6-3 conference mark. The Golden Lions are averaging 77.9 points per game and allowing 83.8. They are led by Quion Williams with 382 points and a 49.3 shooting percentage. The team has five players averaging double digits, including Jaquan Scott and freshman Milhan Charles.

Alcorn also leads Mississippi Valley State 55-38 in the all-time series, with the Braves winning 12 straight games. Last season, Alcorn won both matchups. The Delta Devils are 1-21 overall and 0-8 in SWAC, with their only win coming against Mississippi University for Women.

Mississippi Valley State faces Jackson State on Saturday before playing Alcorn on Monday. The team is averaging 63.4 points per game and allows 85.5, with Michael James leading in scoring at 20.7 points per game. The Delta Devils seek their first Division I win this season, according to team sources.

Following these games, Alcorn prepares to host SWAC schools Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M next week at the Davey L. Whitney Complex. Fans can follow team updates via @BravesSports on X/Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for behind-the-scenes coverage.
