Alcorn Falls to Houston Christian in series finale
Houston Christian scored early and often to defeat Alcorn State 10-4 in the final game of a three-game series Sunday at Husky Field in Houston, Texas. The Huskies won the series after taking the first two games Friday and Saturday, according to sources.
Houston Christian (3-5) jumped on starting pitcher Kayden Sutton in the first inning, scoring five runs. Katcher Halligan drove in Jeremy Rader with a single, giving the Huskies an early 1-0 lead. Preston Curtis then scored on a fielder’s choice, and a balk called on Sutton made it 3-0. Matthew Brandt’s fielder’s choice and an error on the Braves’ infield scored two more runs, pushing the lead to 5-0.
The Huskies added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, with Jack Walker doubling to bring in Rader and Halligan, and Zach Munton’s sacrifice fly scoring Curtis. Alcorn (1-6) responded with four runs in the sixth, highlighted by Cooper Harris singling to drive in a run. Keaten Hawk doubled, bringing in Harris, and Gavin Caston added a double to score Hawk. Nico Garcia’s single plated Caston, reducing the deficit to 8-4.
Houston Christian extended its lead with two runs in the eighth inning. Munton’s single scored Curtis, and Matthew Brandt reached on an error, allowing Coby Hatcher to score. Ben Smith earned the win for the Huskies, pitching 4.2 innings with six strikeouts and allowing three hits. Sutton took the loss for the Braves, working 3.1 innings and giving up eight runs, only one earned.
Alcorn’s offense was led by Davis, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Hawk finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Munton was 2-for-2 with two RBIs for Houston Christian. The Braves will next play Wednesday at ULM in Monroe, Louisiana, beginning at 1 p.m., according to team updates.
