Alabama State women’s tennis wins SWAC title with 4-2 victory over Jackson State
NEW ORLEANS — Jackson State’s women’s tennis team saw its season end Sunday afternoon as Alabama State defeated the Tigers 4-2 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship.
Alabama State took the early lead by winning the doubles point, but Jackson State rallied to tie the match. SWAC Player of the Year Paula Corbalan won her singles match 6-4, 6-4 over Diana Craciun to give the Tigers their first point.
Junior Helen Hernandez then won her singles match at No. 5, 6-3, 6-3, to put Jackson State ahead 2-1. Alabama State’s Jovana Petrovic responded with a 6-4, 7-6 victory at No. 6, tying the score at 2-2.
The final three courts all stretched into three sets, with Alabama State winning on court three to go ahead 3-2. Kesmat El Tawil sealed the victory for the Hornets with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 win in her match.
The match was held at the City Park Pepsi Center, where the energy was heightened by the close competition. Alabama State claimed the SWAC title with the win.
