Alabama A&M Tops Alcorn in SWAC Men’s Tennis Pod
Millbrook, Alabama — Alabama A&M earned a 4-1 victory over Alcorn State on Sunday during a Southwestern Athletic Conference men’s tennis event hosted by Alabama State at The Fields at 17 Springs.
The Bulldogs moved to 6-11 overall and 4-0 in SWAC play, while the Braves fell to 3-17 overall and 0-3 in conference matches. Alcorn secured the only point of the match in doubles, winning at No. 1 and No. 3 positions to take a 2-1 lead after doubles play.
Matthew Holl and Vicent Llobell Buigues of Alcorn narrowly defeated Alabama A&M’s Arnav Pathange and Agustin Marquez 7-6 (8-6) in the top doubles flight. Tomas Grime and Jorge Prats Navarrete added a doubles win for the Braves with a 6-4 victory at No. 3. Alabama A&M’s Yin Chih Lan and Juwan Bae won the No. 2 doubles match 6-2, but Alcorn had already claimed the doubles point.
In singles, Alabama A&M responded strongly, winning four of six matches. Lan defeated Holl 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2. Bae dominated Grime 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4. Eduardo de Benedictis Andreta beat Navarrete 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5. Goran Krivokapic closed out the Bulldogs’ singles wins with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Fabian Juarez at No. 6.
Two singles matches remained unfinished after the team result was decided. In the top spot, Alcorn’s Sebastian Griffiths led 6-2, 5-5 when play was suspended. On court three, Buigues had won the first set 7-5 and was trailing 4-1 in the second when the match was called.
