Alabama A&M Sweeps Alcorn in Final SWAC Women’s Tennis Pod

Montgomery, Alabama — Alabama A&M secured a 4-0 victory over Alcorn State on Sunday at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center, wrapping up the second SWAC Women’s Tennis Pod of the 2026 season. The Bulldogs won the doubles point and completed three singles matches to clinch the win, improving to 8-9 overall and 7-0 in conference play, according to school officials.

Alabama A&M took the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Gabrielle Henderson and Sofia Sotelo Raya defeated Katherine Grados and Natalija Nikolic 6-0 at the second spot, while Melissa Mwakha and Tstitsi Mahere beat Oihane Villanueva Lopez and Zoe Crimmel 6-3 at No. 3. The top doubles match, featuring Alcorn’s Amelia Tatafu and Hana Bajramovic against Alabama A&M’s Alicia Owegi and Nardine Salem, was left unfinished with the Braves leading 5-2 after the team point was already decided.

In singles play, Alabama A&M completed victories at No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 to seal the match. Sofia Sotelo Raya dominated Zoe Crimmel 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. Melissa Mwakha earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Nikolic at No. 4, and Lavynia Vieira de Sa defeated Katherine Grados 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6. Several singles matches remained unfinished, including Tatafu’s match against Owegi, who led 6-3, 2-1 at No. 1, and Bajramovic’s match against Henderson, which was tied at 7-6 in the first set before play was halted.

Alcorn State is scheduled to host Mississippi Valley State on April 2 at the Halls Ferry Tennis Courts in Vicksburg, Mississippi, to conclude its spring schedule. First serve is set for 11 a.m., according to the school’s athletic department.
