Ole Miss soccer falls to Mississippi State 4-1 in SEC opener

Oxford, Miss. — Ole Miss soccer lost to Mississippi State 4-1 in its Southeastern Conference opener Friday night at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium, according to the university’s athletics department.

Mississippi State’s Laila Murillo opened the scoring in the 19th minute, assisted by Chiara Tappe, to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead. Ole Miss responded with a goal from Sarah Granno in the 56th minute, her second of the season, on a pass from Cassidy Kuehne.

However, the Rebels were reduced to 10 players in the 69th minute after a red card. Kati Anne Shepherd scored for Mississippi State 18 seconds later to restore the Bulldogs’ advantage. Kara Harris added another goal in the 81st minute, and Murillo sealed the victory with a penalty kick in the 85th minute.

Mississippi State finished with a 13-11 shot advantage and eight shots on goal, while Ole Miss had seven. The Rebels held 54% possession and earned five corner kicks. Taylor Prigge made three saves in goal for Ole Miss.

Ole Miss (7-2-0, 0-1-0 SEC) returns to play next Friday at Auburn. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
