William Carey women’s basketball routs Abraham Baldwin 84-51
William Carey’s women’s basketball team opened strong and never looked back, securing an 84-51 road win at Abraham Baldwin inside the Fillie Dome on Saturday.
Head coach Jessica Garriga praised her team’s performance, noting, “Good showing today. We executed on both sides of the ball and won the boards. Love seeing all the pieces start to come together as we move into conference play.”
The Lady Crusaders set the tone early, jumping to a 9-0 lead. Brooklyn Cuevas extended the lead to 12-3 with her second three-pointer of the quarter. The offense continued to click, and with her third three, Cuevas made it 21-9. William Carey finished the opening quarter with a 6-0 run, capped by a driving layup from Alyssa Hillard for a 25-9 advantage.
Abraham Baldwin responded in the second quarter, with Shakiria Chaney scoring on a steal and layup. The Wildcats trimmed the deficit to 35-23 with just over a minute remaining before Hillard’s late layup sent the Crusaders into halftime with a 37-23 lead.
The third quarter belonged to William Carey’s sharpshooters. Sherer hit a corner three, Cuevas scored three times from the wing, and Corpuz added a three as the lead grew past 20. A series of baskets, including a runner from Corpuz and a three from Sherer, pushed the margin to 62-35 heading into the final quarter.
William Carey maintained its intensity in the fourth, with Leah Sutton scoring back-to-back buckets and Cuevas converting a steal into a layup. Doyle added consecutive finishes to extend the lead beyond 30. Presley Thompson’s mid-range jumper and Bailey Devall’s late layup finalized the final score.
Brooklyn Cuevas led all scorers with 17 points, while Meyah Doyle added 13. Shaneal Corpuz contributed 11 points, and Leah Sutton finished with 10. The Lady Crusaders will return home to face Brewton-Parker College on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Clinton Gym, according to team officials.
