William Carey edges Thomas University 87-84 in tense finish

Thomasville, Ga. — William Carey University used a hot offensive start and a composed finish to beat Thomas University 87-84 Thursday night.

Assistant coach Phillip McCray said Thomas was well-prepared and challenged the Crusaders defensively. Carey fell behind 12-7 early but responded with a 16-4 run, sparked by a Jamar Jenkins three-pointer. Arzika Seibou and Malik Franklin combined for 13 straight points, giving the Crusaders a seven-point lead with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

Thomas narrowed the gap to 23-20, but Carey quickly extended its lead with a 9-2 run, including a three from Javeon Gordon. The Crusaders finished the half strong, leading 42-34 at halftime. They extended their advantage early in the second half, with Anthony Robinson scoring a layup and Gordon hitting another three to make it 57-42 just three minutes in.

Thomas fought back, trimming the lead to 67-58 midway through the second half. With under five minutes remaining, Thomas pulled within four, but Gordon answered with a clutch three. The Nighthawks tied the game at 84 with 39 seconds left, but Franklin sank two free throws after drawing a foul to give Carey an 86-84 lead with 10 seconds remaining.

Carey’s defense forced a turnover on Thomas’ final possession, sealing the victory. McCray said the team needs to improve at closing out games but was pleased with the win. Franklin led all scorers with 29 points, followed by Gordon with 17, Robinson with 14, and Jenkins with 12. Carey will next face Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College on Saturday in Tifton, Georgia, with tip-off scheduled for 1 p.m.
