Another intellectual benchmark at Northeast Mississippi Community College was broken during the 2022-23 school year.
A total of 68 student-athletes at Northeast secured scholastic accolades from the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC).
Northeast has either tied or set a new school record for most Academic All-MACCC winners for five straight athletic seasons. The previous mark of 57 honorees was matched each of the last two years.
The MACCC annually recognizes both freshmen and sophomores from its 15 member institutions that complete 24 cumulative hours between the fall and spring semesters with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.25.
Nominees with a GPA between 3.25 and 3.79 obtain Academic All-MACCC while those with a GPA of 3.8 or greater earn Distinguished Academic All-MACCC. Athletes in their final season of eligibility qualify by taking 12 countable hours with the proper GPA.
Northeast’s traditional service area, which includes Alcorn, Prentiss, Tippah, Tishomingo and Union counties, was well represented as usual with 27 awardees. Booneville High School had the most alumni on this lineup with eight.
Baseball had the most individuals acknowledged out of any program at Northeast for the second year in a row. The Tigers had 22 of the 34 players on their active roster achieve this distinction.
Football and softball also had double-digit selections once again. Softball, which accounted for Northeast’s top team GPA at 3.64, claimed 16 recipients while football had 12.
Northeast’s previous department record for most National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Academic Awards was eclipsed as well with 39 standouts collecting that reward.
A listing of Northeast student-athletes that were honored as either Distinguished Academic All-MACCC or Academic All-MACCC is found on the Northeast Mississippi Community College Athletic website.
