Owens, Sharp receive MACCC Player of the Week accolades
A pair of Northwest baseball and softball players have been chosen for conference pitcher and player of the week honors, the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) announced on Tuesday morning.
Sophomore pitcher Scott Sharp was chosen for MACCC Pitcher of the Week honors, while sophomore softball infielder Kaylee Owens was voted as the MACCC Player of the Week.
In last Friday’s 3-0 win against No. 1 Heartland, Sharp tossed all seven innings, recording seven strikeouts against one walk and four base hits. With the complete game shutout, the Olive Branch native is now 3-1 on the mound and has 19 strikeouts this season.
Owens has been a constant force at the plate this season for Northwest, and the Fulton native played a major role in guiding the Rangers to a 5-1 week, which included three wins against 11th-ranked Des Moines Area. Owens batted .500 for the week with a double, a triple, two home runs and four RBIs, and the sophomore infielder has batted over .600 for most of the season.
Both players are the first to receive conference player of the week honors for Northwest baseball and softball. The Rangers are off to a 12-4 start on the diamond and the softball program is 13-3 to open the season, earning a No. 6 spot in this week’s NJCAA Division II Softball Rankings.
