Women’s Tennis Falls to Principia in UMAC Opener, 4-3
The W women’s tennis team opened its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) South Division schedule with a 4-3 loss to Principia at the Garrett Courts in Columbus, Mississippi, according to school officials.
The Owls are now 3-7 overall and 0-1 in UMAC play. Principia improved to 4-4 and 1-0 in conference action. MUW trailed 1-0 after losing the doubles point, with Principia winning at first and second doubles to secure the team lead.
The Owls’ only doubles victory came from the No. 3 team of Emma Horton and Harley Lowry, a senior-freshman pair from Caledonia High School, who defeated their opponents 7-5. Principia won second singles to extend its lead to 2-0.
MUW responded with singles wins from Alaina Mathis at No. 5 (6-1, 6-1) and Horton at No. 6 (6-2, 6-0), tying the match at 2-2. Principia then won matches at Nos. 3 and 1 singles to secure the victory.
Bailey Flynn earned a straight-set win at No. 4 singles for MUW, 7-5, 6-0, but it was not enough to overcome the Panthers. The match ended with a 4-3 result in favor of Principia.
