William Carey Track & Field Excels at Commodore Challenge and Samford Open
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — William Carey University’s track and field teams continued their impressive indoor season last weekend, earning notable results at the Commodore Challenge in Nashville, Tennessee, and the Samford Open in Birmingham, Alabama.
At the Commodore Challenge, Jaylyn Session finished sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.89 seconds. Her teammate Jovel Madourie placed 12th in the 200m and 17th in the 400m. Barnabas Aggerh led the Crusaders in the sprints, winning the 60-meter dash in 6.57 seconds. Session added a fifth-place finish in the same event.
In the field events, Royan Walters posted a runner-up performance in the long jump with a mark of 7.58 meters. Tavian Johnson and Jamal Martin tied for 11th in the high jump at 1.83 meters, while Walters finished eighth in the triple jump at 14.63 meters.
In Birmingham, William Carey continued to perform well. In the sprints, Dejean Francees and Quinjerius ran the 200m in 22.12 and 22.26 seconds, respectively. Julius Giller clocked 1:57 in the 800-meter run, and Luke Skinner finished the mile in 4:23. Matthew McGuire finished second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:07.
The Crusaders excelled in the field events, with Avery Abram winning the high jump by clearing 2.10 meters. Jor’Dyn Payne cleared 1.84 meters, and Charles Wilson finished seventh in the long jump at 7.48 meters and third in the triple jump with 14.48 meters. Wilson also placed fourth in the triple jump with an 11.72-meter effort.
The women’s team posted several top-ten finishes. Tyeese Smith led with a fourth-place finish in the 60m in 7.62 seconds. Ja’Niya McDonald finished in the top ten in the 200m with 25.44 seconds, and Jennifer Ezeoha ran the 400m in 58.64 seconds. Hannah Mitchell clocked 2:32 in the 800m, while Kristina Stojanovic won the mile in 5:07. The 4×440 relay team of Ezeoha, Maria Schroeder, Aubrey Johnson, and Stojanovic finished fifth in 4:02.
In field events, Zaniyah Wilson cleared 1.60 meters for fourth in the high jump. Kerrishma Williams finished eighth in the high jump and fourth in the long jump with 5.50 meters. Natalee Dillon jumped 5.05 meters, narrowly missing the top ten. Wilson also finished fourth in the triple jump with 11.72 meters, while Ciearra Gibson threw 10.54 meters in the shot put.
The Crusaders next compete Jan. 31 at the Celebration Pointe Indoor Classic in Gainesville, Florida.
