William Carey Tennis Teams Split Matches with Ozarks
The William Carey University women’s tennis team defeated the University of the Ozarks 4-3 on Friday at the Magnolia Tennis Center. The Owls’ men’s team fell to Ozarks 4-3 in the same match day.
The women’s team started strong by sweeping all three doubles matches to earn the team point. Austin Hays and Bailey Flynn won at No. 1 doubles, 6-1. Alaina Mathis and Kayleigh Griffin secured victory at No. 2, 6-3, while Emma Horton and Harley Lowry claimed the No. 3 doubles match, 7-5.
Five of the six singles matches were decided in straight sets, with Ozarks winning three. William Carey’s wins came from Flynn at No. 3, 6-3, 6-3, and Horton at No. 5, 6-2, 6-0. The outcome hinged on the No. 2 singles match, where Griffin defeated Ozarks’ Brooke Humphrey in a three-set thriller, 6-1, 3-6, 10-7, giving the Owls the overall team victory.
On the men’s side, William Carey also started strong, taking the doubles point with wins at No. 2 from Juan Garcia and Marcos Fernandez, 6-3, and at No. 3 from Josh Cooper and Alvaro Bardales, 7-5.
In singles play, the Owls split sets in three matches, with two victories for Ozarks. Jorge Ortiz won at No. 1 singles after dropping the first set 7-5 but rebounding to win the second 6-4 and the deciding third set 10-6. Bardales added another point for William Carey with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6.
Despite the efforts, the Owls fell short in the other three singles matches decided in straight sets, resulting in the loss for the men’s team.
