William Carey Tennis Sweeps Belhaven in Homecoming Matches

COLUMBUS, Miss. — William Carey University’s tennis teams highlighted the school’s Homecoming 2026 celebrations with victories over Belhaven University this weekend at the Garrett Courts.

The men’s team earned a 5-2 win over the Blazers, completing a season sweep. The women’s team secured a 6-1 victory, also sweeping the season series against Belhaven.

William Carey’s men’s team dominated doubles play, winning all three matches to secure the team point. Jorge Ortiz Catala and Sandro Giangregorio improved their record at No. 1 doubles to 6-4, defeating Belhaven’s duo, 6-4. Juan Garcia and Marcos Fernandez won at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, while Alvaro Bardales and Josh Cooper coasted at No. 3 doubles, 6-1.

In singles, the Owls took four of six matches in straight sets. Ortiz Catala defeated Jesus Diaz of Belhaven, 6-2, 6-0. Josh Cooper narrowly lost in three sets, with scores of 4-6, 6-4, 11-9. Giangregorio (6-3, 6-0), Garcia (6-1, 6-2), and Fernandez (6-1, 6-2) all posted victories. Marcos Fernandez improved his personal record to 11-2, winning five consecutive matches.

On the women’s side, William Carey took advantage of Belhaven’s depleted lineup. The Owls won four of six matches and received three forfeits. In doubles, the team lost No. 1 but won No. 2, 6-3, with Emma Horton and Austin Hays. A forfeit at No. 3 doubles gave William Carey the team point.

In singles, Horton advanced after Belhaven’s Millie Gallarno retired after the first set. Brooklyn Ward lost at No. 2, making the match score 2-1 in favor of William Carey. The Owls then won four consecutive singles matches, highlighted by Bailey Flynn’s three-set victory at No. 3. Flynn took the first set 6-3, lost the second 6-1, but dominated the third, 10-2, over Evey Moore. Horton won in straight sets at No. 4, 6-3, 6-0. Forfeits at Nos. 5 and 6 completed the sweep.

Flynn and Alaina Mathis both recorded their sixth singles wins of the season, leading the team with 6-7 records overall.
