William Carey Tennis Splits Doubleheader with Huntingdon
The William Carey University tennis teams hosted Huntingdon College in a non-conference doubleheader at Garrett Courts. The men’s team (5-3) secured a 5-2 victory, while the women’s team (2-5) lost 6-1.
The Owls men’s team won their second consecutive match and improved to five wins in six spring matches. They started strong in doubles, winning two of three matches. Jorge Ortiz and Juan Garcia captured No. 1 doubles with a 6-1 score, and Marcos Fernandez and Sandro Giangregorio took No. 3 doubles, 6-3. They lost No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, William Carey took four of six matches. Wins at Nos. 3, 5, and 6 came from Alvaro Bardales (7-6, 6-1), Giangregorio (6-3, 6-2), and Dylan Barber (6-1, 6-2). The Hawks secured victories at Nos. 1 and 4. Fernandez split sets at No. 2 before winning a decisive 10-3 third-set tiebreaker against Tyler Garcia.
On the women’s side, junior Austin Hays, from nearby Caledonia, Mississippi, earned her first singles win. She defeated KJ Crow of Huntingdon in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
