William Carey Sweeps Williams Baptist in Four-Game Series

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — William Carey University finished a dominant weekend at Milton Wheeler Field, sweeping Williams Baptist in a four-game series. The Crusaders won Saturday’s opener 13-4 and edged the Eagles 2-1 in the nightcap, according to school officials.

In the first game, Williams Baptist took an early lead when Cade Parks hit a solo homer to left field. Carey responded with a six-run second inning, loading the bases on walks and a hit-by-pitch before Cam Senior was hit to tie the game. Tanner Ladner doubled in two runs, and DeeJay Booth added a two-run double as Carey took a 6-1 lead. The Eagles cut the deficit to 6-3 in the third, but Carey answered in the bottom half with an RBI single from Senior. Williams Baptist scored once more in the fourth, making it 7-4, but Carey pulled away with a homer from Booth and three RBI singles, extending the lead to 12-4. Walters drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

In the second game, Carey’s offense struck first. Booth drew a walk, and Tyler Ducksworth doubled home the run in the first inning. Williams Baptist tied the game in the second on an error following singles by Connor Brinkley and Mason Andrews. Carey regained the lead immediately after, with Senior scoring on a sacrifice fly from Gage Hinnant. Starting pitcher Holton Hartzog delivered five innings, allowing only one run while working around a two-out single in the fifth. Jimmie Johnson pitched the final two innings, securing the victory with a strikeout in the seventh.

William Carey is scheduled to return to action Tuesday against Talladega College at Silsby Baseball Field, with first pitch set for 1 p.m., according to school officials.
