William Carey Sweeps Williams Baptist in Baseball Doubleheader

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — William Carey swept a doubleheader against Williams Baptist on Friday night at Milton Wheeler Field, winning game one 8-4 and game two 23-2. The Crusaders improve to 4-0 in the series after the two wins.

In game one, Williams Baptist threatened early with back-to-back singles but was thwarted by a double play and a strikeout from Carey starting pitcher Matthew Davis. Carey responded immediately, loading the bases and scoring two runs on a single by Jayden Mark. An error allowed another run, and Franklin Hernandez drove in two with a double, giving Carey a 5-0 lead after one inning.

Carey added a run in the second inning on an RBI double from Hays Carley. Williams Baptist scored four runs in the fourth inning, aided by a leadoff single and a throwing error. RBI hits from M. Andrews and S. Morrison, along with W. Riley’s two-run single, cut Carey’s lead to 6-4. The Crusaders answered with two outs in the bottom of the inning, with Taylor Walters driving in two runs to push the lead back to 8-4. Davis and reliever Jackson Hawsey held Williams Baptist to just one hit over the final three innings to secure the win.

In game two, DeeJay Booth hit a solo home run in the first inning, and Franklin Hernandez added a two-run single. Williams Baptist scored twice in the second, but Carey exploded in the bottom half, scoring six runs without a hit thanks to walks and hit-by-pitches. Alan McClean’s single and Booth’s three-run double highlighted the inning, giving Carey a 13-2 lead.

The Crusaders continued to pour it on in the third, with Hays Carley and Cam Senior each delivering key hits, and a double-play sequence produced another run. Jack Jordan’s sacrifice fly and Clayton Williamson’s grand slam in the fifth pushed the score to 22-2. Jordan added a solo shot in the sixth for the final tally. Carey will conclude the series Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
