William Carey Sweeps Brewton-Parker in Doubleheader
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — William Carey completed a three-game sweep of Brewton-Parker on Saturday, winning both ends of a doubleheader at Milton Wheeler Field. The Crusaders secured an 8-1 victory in the first game and edged the Barons 6-5 in the nightcap, according to school sources.
In the opener, Carey took an early lead and pulled away in the third inning. Jayden Mark drove in the first run with a groundout, and Hays Carley sparked a rally with an RBI double. Mark added an RBI single, and Taylor Walters doubled to extend the lead. Cam Senior then hit a two-run double, and Gage Hinnant capped the inning with a two-run double, giving Carey an 8-0 advantage.
Starting pitcher Dylan Wallace limited Brewton-Parker to three hits through five innings. The Barons scored their only run in the sixth. Relief pitcher Caleb Ougel shut down the threat by inducing a double play and working a scoreless seventh to earn the win, according to Carey officials.
The second game was more dramatic. Carey scored first in the opening inning, with Hinnant and DeeJay Booth advancing on a double steal before Carley’s sacrifice fly and Mark’s RBI single gave the Crusaders a 2-0 lead.
Brewton-Parker responded in the third with an error and two walks, leading to two runs. The Barons briefly took the lead in the fourth, but Carey answered immediately in the sixth. Nic Arender drove in a run with a single, and the game was tied 3-3.
In the seventh, Carey regained the lead with four consecutive singles. Brewton-Parker tied the game at 5-5 in the seventh on a solo home run by Michael Son. The decisive moment came in the bottom of the eighth when Tyler Ducksworth drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the go-ahead run. Jimmie Johnson then retired the Barons in order in the ninth to secure the sweep, according to the school’s report.
William Carey is scheduled to return to action Tuesday, March 24, for a non-conference game against Southern University of New Orleans in New Orleans, Louisiana. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., officials said.
