William Carey Softball Sweeps Xavier with Strong Offense and Clutch Pitching

Hattiesburg, Miss. — William Carey softball swept a Saturday doubleheader at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field, defeating Xavier 7-5 in game one and 2-1 in the nightcap, according to school officials.

In the opener, Carey set the tone early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Liz Cross drew a walk, stole second, and scored on a double by Brooklyn Montana. Montana later scored on a groundout by Jayden Sawyer, giving the Lady Crusaders an early lead.

Carey added a run in the second inning and extended its lead to 5-0 in the third. Xavier struggled offensively, managing no hits and just two baserunners through the first four innings. However, the Gold Nuggets rallied in the sixth, scoring four runs to close the gap to 6-5. Xavier’s threat was thwarted by Carey’s defense and clutch pitching from Sawyer, who closed out the game.

In the second game, Sawyer struck out the side in the first inning and kept Xavier hitless through six innings, allowing only one run in the seventh. Xavier loaded the bases in the final inning before Sawyer struck out the final batter to seal the win.

William Carey returns to action Tuesday, hosting Louisiana Christian in a non-conference doubleheader at 4 p.m. at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field, according to athletic officials.
