William Carey Softball Sweeps Point University with Shutout Victories
The William Carey softball team finished the weekend with two decisive shutout victories over Point University on Saturday at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.
In the opener, the Lady Crusaders edged out a 4-0 win. William Carey broke a scoreless tie in the second inning and never looked back. After both teams were held hitless in the first, Point threatened when Chelsey Hogsed reached on a bunt single in the top of the second. WCU starter Jayden Sawyer responded by retiring the next three batters to keep the Skyhawks off the scoreboard.
Carey took the lead in the bottom half of the second. Julia Shaw singled and Kinley Hogue followed with a bunt single to put two runners on. Sawyer then launched a three-run home run to left-center, giving the Lady Crusaders a 3-0 advantage. The team added an insurance run in the fourth inning when Anna Grace Shows lined an RBI single after Brooklynn Montana drew a walk. Point made one final push in the seventh, with Hogsed reaching base and advancing to third after a fielding error and a wild pitch. Sawyer struck out the final batter to end the threat and secure the shutout.
Sawyer was dominant in the circle, allowing just one hit over five innings. Shaw finished the game with two innings of one-hit ball. The Lady Crusaders carried their momentum into the second game, winning 11-0 via run rule.
In game two, Carey scored early, with Shows driving in the first run with a single in the opening inning. The team added four runs in the second, highlighted by a two-run single from Liz Cross and an RBI single from Albanie Fussell. Hogue contributed an RBI to increase the lead to 5-0.
The Lady Crusaders broke the game open in the third inning, scoring six runs. Shaw delivered a two-run single, Caroline Lindsey added an RBI single, and Hogue contributed another RBI. Sawyer capped the inning with a sacrifice fly, pushing the lead to 11-0. Reanna Nieman pitched a seven-inning no-hitter, allowing just one hit — a single in the third — for Carey.
William Carey is scheduled to host LSU-Alexandria on Tuesday, March 24, at 4 p.m. at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.
