William Carey Routs Faulkner 10-3 Behind Six-Run Fifth
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — William Carey broke open a close game with a six-run fifth inning, defeating Faulkner University 10-3 Friday night at Milton Wheeler Field.
The Crusaders scored first in the bottom of the second inning. Taylor Walters doubled down the left-field line and later scored on Cam Senior’s single to left to give Carey an early 1-0 lead.
Faulkner responded in the top of the fourth with a solo home run by Edrien Martínez and an RBI single from CJ Robertson, taking a 2-1 lead. Carey answered in the bottom of the inning with a rally that changed the game.
Jayden Mark delivered a two-run double to left-center, scoring Gage Hinnant and Tyler Ducksworth. Walters added an RBI single, and the Crusaders scored three more runs via walks and a hit-by-pitch to take a commanding 7-2 lead.
William Carey extended its lead in the sixth when Franklin Hernandez lined a two-run single to right field, making it 9-2. Faulkner scored once in the seventh on Orlando Arellano’s RBI single, but Carey answered in the eighth with Hinnant driving in a run with a single to cap the scoring.
Matthew Davis earned the win on the mound, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits while striking out 10 batters.
The Crusaders return to action today with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Milton Wheeler Field to conclude the series.
