Westin Cooper Named Kid Coach by Children’s of Mississippi and Mississippi State Bulldogs

Children’s of Mississippi and the Mississippi State Bulldogs have partnered to honor young patients through the Kid Coach program. The initiative highlights the inspiring stories of pediatric patients facing health challenges.

This week’s Kid Coach is Westin Cooper of Starkville. When he was 6 years old, Westin was rushed to the emergency room at Children’s of Mississippi with dangerously high blood sugar levels. He was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit for treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis, a life-threatening complication of diabetes.

Westin spent a week in the hospital receiving expert care. His mother noted that the playroom and toys helped pass the time, and she praised the kindness and compassion of the staff. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, Westin faced the condition with courage and strength. Now 9, he is active and independent, enjoying basketball and football. He also collects baseball cards and loves reading.

Westin’s diabetic alert dog, Champ, is his special buddy. He is a big fan of the Mississippi State Bulldogs and will participate in the upcoming game, where Children’s of Mississippi and the Bulldogs will cheer for him.

The Kid Coach program aims to celebrate resilience and inspire others, highlighting Westin’s remarkable journey through his health challenges.
