Webster women hold off Mississippi University for Women in 85-70 victory
ST. LOUIS — Webster University’s women’s basketball team overcame a late surge from Mississippi University for Women to earn an 85-70 victory at Grant Gym on Thursday. The Gorloks improved to 10-6 overall and 7-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Owls fell to 4-12 and 3-5 in league play.
The Owls led for most of the first half, holding a 21-19 advantage after one quarter and a 43-39 lead at halftime. Senior guard Calysia Phillips hit buzzer-beating three-pointers at the end of both quarters to keep MUW in front. The Owls maintained a 10-point cushion, 63-53, entering the fourth quarter, but Webster responded with a 12-0 run to take the lead for good.
Mississippi University for Women managed just one field goal in the final period, scored with 20 seconds remaining. The Gorloks outscored the Owls 22-7 in the fourth quarter, sealing the win.
Leading MUW was fifth-year senior Conley Langford, who scored 29 points on 9-of-18 shooting, including 7-of-12 from three-point range. She added seven rebounds and two steals. Senior Mia Bowen contributed 20 points, six rebounds, and two blocks. Phillips finished with eight points, five assists, and four steals. Freshmen Rhianna Dinkins and Jakayla Smith scored four and two points, respectively. Wilson added seven points and three steals.
The Owls are idle until next Thursday, when they travel to Greenville University for a 5:30 p.m. game.
