Webster defeats Owls in series finale, 21-8

Webster University defeated Mississippi University for Women in the series finale of their softball matchup, 21-8, at CCA Field in Columbus, Mississippi. The Gorloks (15-10, 10-1 SLIAC) took control early, jumping out to a 10-2 lead after three innings and maintaining the advantage.

The Owls (15-12, 9-4 SLIAC) struggled to contain Webster’s offense, which collected 17 hits, including six home runs and a double. The early runs charged to MUW starter Campbell McCluney, who pitched three innings, allowing seven hits and four walks. The Gorloks scored six earned runs during that time.

The Owls’ relief pitchers also faced difficulties. Chris Ellis pitched 2.1 innings and allowed five runs, JB Crumpton threw 1.1 innings giving up two runs, and Josh Mackey also pitched 1.1 innings, surrendering four runs. Despite the loss, W’s batters produced 10 hits, led by Zach Egan, who went 3-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Zach Johnson added two hits in five at-bats with an RBI. Hastings Gibson, making his seventh start of the season, went 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs, including his first home run as an Owl with a solo shot in the fifth inning.

The series was previously split after Friday’s twinbill, but Webster secured the decisive win in the series finale.
