W Women’s Tennis Falls to Blue Mountain; Men’s Team Wins

The William Carey University men’s tennis team defeated Blue Mountain Christian University 6-1 Wednesday at the Garrett Courts in Columbus, Mississippi. The women’s team, however, lost to BMCU 7-0 in the non-conference match.

The Owls men improved to 8-6 overall, winning for the second consecutive match and third in their last four outings. They took two of three doubles matches to secure the opening team point and won five of six singles bouts. In doubles, Juan Garcia and Marcos Fernandez defeated their opponents 6-3 at No. 2, while Alvaro Bardales and Josh Cooper won 6-2 at No. 3.

In singles play, four of MUW’s five wins came in straight sets. Jorge Ortiz Catala won at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-4, improving his season record to 7-2. Josh Cooper lost in three sets after splitting the first two, with scores of 1-6, 6-4, 11-9. Sandro Giangregorio claimed victory at No. 3, 6-1, 6-2. Garcia fought through a three-set match, winning 6-2, 2-6, 11-9, at No. 4. Fernandez and Bardales secured wins at Nos. 5 and 6, with scores of 6-2, 6-4, and 6-0, 6-0, respectively.

The MUW women’s team struggled against BMCU, losing all six singles matches in straight sets and totaling just nine games across the board. Austin Hays was responsible for five of those games, losing 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. The Toppers also swept the doubles matches, winning all three.

William Carey’s tennis teams are scheduled to play next on Friday at 10 a.m., hosting Belhaven University in a non-conference match at the Garrett Courts.
