UT Southern edges Blue Mountain in 10-inning SSAC baseball opener
Blue Mountain Christian University’s baseball team lost to UT Southern 8-3 in 10 innings Friday during the opening game of their SSAC series at home.
The Firehawks pulled away with a five-run top of the 10th inning to secure the victory. UT Southern took an early 3-0 lead before Blue Mountain responded in the fifth inning. The Toppers scored once to cut the deficit to 3-1 and continued to chip away, eventually tying the game to force extra innings.
In the 10th, UT Southern scored five runs to clinch the win. Blue Mountain finished with eight hits in the game. Yaidel Perez led the Toppers offensively, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. Jake Meilstrup added a hit, scored a run, walked once and stole a base. Jarrett Morris, Trace Roy and Hugh Parsons each drove in a run. Jacob Bryant, Cody Presley and Morris also contributed hits.
On the mound, Chip Harris started and pitched five innings, allowing three runs and striking out four. Christian Maness pitched 4.1 innings of relief with four strikeouts. Jesse Hancock also appeared out of the bullpen. The Toppers aim to bounce back as they continue their series against UT Southern.
