UAH tops Mississippi College in series opener, 11-8

Mississippi College baseball lost the series opener against UAH, 11-8, Friday at Frierson Field in Clinton, Mississippi. The Chargers built an early lead and held on despite a late rally from the Choctaws, according to sources.

UAH jumped to a 5-1 lead after two innings and extended their advantage with a four-run third inning. The Chargers improved to 16-20 overall and 11-14 in Gulf South Conference play, while Mississippi College moved to 23-17 and 16-9 in league action.

The Choctaws produced 14 hits, including five doubles and a home run, but couldn’t overcome the deficit. Cade Gadman drove in three runs with two doubles. Will Langston homered, collected two hits, and scored twice. Ty Murphy also had three hits, and Jake LaRocca drove in two runs.

Mississippi College chipped away, scoring two runs in the fifth and continuing pressure in the seventh. However, a double play in the sixth and missed scoring opportunities late prevented a comeback. Caleb Peterson took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits over two innings. Blake Gollott pitched 3.1 innings of relief, and Kamryn Carlisle finished with 3.2 scoreless frames.

Tyler Smith earned the win for UAH, and Jase Gray recorded the save. Smith allowed one hit and walked four in a relief appearance, while Gray struck out one in a clean ninth inning. The teams will continue their series with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. Mississippi College will honor its 2003 American Southwest Conference championship team prior to the games, according to university officials.
