Tylik Weeks scores 21 as Southern Miss falls to App State
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Tylik Weeks scored 21 points to lead Southern Miss in a 70-63 loss to Appalachian State on Thursday night at Reed Green Coliseum, according to the university’s athletics department.
The Golden Eagles (11-12, 5-6 Sun Belt) struggled offensively, shooting 36.2 percent from the field and just 17.6 percent from three-point range. Appalachian State (14-9, 7-4) shot 39.2 percent overall and connected on 47 percent of its three-pointers.
Southern Miss changed its starting lineup, featuring Izzy Hart, Curt Lewis, Tylik Weeks, Dylan Brumfield, and Djahi Binet. Binet scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, reaching double figures for the 10th time this season. Weeks’ 21 points marked his 21st game in double figures this season, and Hart added 14, including three three-pointers.
The game was close early, with Southern Miss taking a brief 8-7 lead. However, Appalachian State went on a drought, allowing the Golden Eagles to hold a 15-14 lead midway through the first half. The Mountaineers eventually took a 29-27 advantage into halftime.
In the second half, Southern Miss went four minutes without a field goal but narrowed the gap with free throws from Weeks and Binet. The game remained tight until Appalachian State pulled ahead with a late run, including a three-pointer from Jalen Tot that sealed the victory. The Mountaineers’ strong shooting from beyond the arc and clutch free throws helped secure their win.
