Troy Women’s Tennis Downs Alcorn 7-0 at Home
Troy’s women’s tennis team defeated Alcorn State 7-0 in a nonconference match Sunday at Halls Ferry Tennis Courts in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The Trojans improved to 5-6 overall, while the Braves fell to 4-14, according to school sources.
Troy claimed the doubles point by winning the first two courts. Maria Guirguis and Valeriia Avdeeva defeated Alcorn’s Hana Bajramovic and Amelia Tatafu 6-0. Emilia Namyslo and Leena Metwally followed with a 6-2 victory over Katherine Grados and Natalija Nikolic. The third doubles match was left unfinished with Troy leading 5-2, as the outcome had already been decided, the school said.
In singles play, Troy dominated, dropping only one set across all six courts. Valeriia Avdeeva posted the most dominant win, defeating Tatafu 6-0, 6-0. Leena Metwally and Hiba Heni also recorded straight-set victories on courts three and five, respectively. Maria Guirguis handled freshman Hana Bajramovic 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1. Alexia Zarate edged out Oihane Villanueva Lopez 7-5, 7-5 in a competitive match at No. 4.
The final singles point went to Veena Nazar, who survived a first-set tiebreak before winning 7-6 (7-1), 6-3, the school reported. The Trojans will compete in the second Southwestern Athletic Conference pod of the season March 27-29 in Montgomery, Alabama, facing Grambling State, Southern, and Alabama A&M, according to team updates.
