The W Men Keep Third in SLIAC With Win Over Eureka

The W men’s basketball team maintained its third-place position in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 79-71 win over Eureka College at Pohl Gym in Columbus, Mississippi.

With four conference games remaining, the Owls (11-10, 7-5 SLIAC) are 1.5 games behind Lyon College for second place in the league standings. The team improved to 7-1 at home this season.

Junior Joe Haze Austin led all scorers with 22 points off the bench, making 8 of 11 shots, including six three-pointers that tied the school record. He also contributed two steals. Sophomore Tray Huguley started slow but finished with 21 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks, and three assists. Huguley extended his streak of double-figure scoring to all 19 games this season, including 12 games with 20 or more points.

Trent Walker added 12 points, nine rebounds, and five assists, while Devin McClaine scored 10 points with six rebounds. The Owls dominated the boards, outrebounding the Red Devils 39-22, including limiting Eureka to three offensive rebounds. MUW scored 15 second-chance points and had a 36-18 advantage in points in the paint.

The team also limited turnovers to nine, its fifth game of the year with single-digit mistakes. MUW led for nearly 34 minutes and took control early, building a halftime lead after a late first-half basket by Austin. The Owls’ largest lead was 12 points, achieved on a Huguley layup in the second half. They return to action February 14 at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois.
