Texas State Tops Southern Miss in Comeback Victory

San Marcos, Texas — Texas State University defeated Southern Miss 74-69 Saturday afternoon in a Sun Belt Conference game. The Bobcats (11-9, 4-4 Sun Belt) rallied from a halftime deficit to secure the win at Strahan Arena.

Tylik Weeks led all scorers with 24 points on 8-for-15 shooting for Southern Miss (11-9, 5-3 Sun Belt). Dylan Brumfield added 16 points, and the Golden Eagles forced 18 turnovers, converting them into 15 points. Southern Miss also shot 83.3 percent from the free-throw line, making 20 of 24 attempts.

Texas State shot 47.6 percent overall and went 6-for-13 from beyond the arc. The Bobcats outscored the Golden Eagles 47-39 in the second half to come from behind. The game was tied 28-28 at halftime after Southern Miss took a narrow lead.

Southern Miss started strong, with Weeks and Brumfield scoring early, but Texas State responded with an 8-0 run. The Golden Eagles led at halftime but fell behind early in the second half after Texas State opened with a 9-0 run. The Bobcats maintained their lead for most of the second half, despite a late push from Southern Miss.

Southern Miss managed to cut the deficit to seven points with 40 seconds remaining. However, Texas State closed out the game with five free throws as Brumfield hit a three-pointer at the buzzer. The Bobcats now hold a 3-1 record against Southern Miss in San Marcos and lead the all-time series 5-4 after splitting this season’s matchups.
