Texas Southern Sweeps Doubleheader from Alcorn State in SWAC Softball

Texas Southern took both games of a Southwestern Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Alcorn State on Friday at the Alcorn Softball Complex in Lorman, Mississippi.

The Tigers opened with a 9-4 victory, overcoming an early three-run deficit. Texas Southern scored four unearned runs in the fifth inning, aided by Alcorn errors, to break open the game. Jordyn Talbert led the offense with a 2-for-4 effort, including a triple, an RBI, and three runs scored.

Alcorn jumped ahead early, scoring three runs in the first inning. However, errors by the Braves helped Texas Southern rally. Alcorn’s Chiara Olison pitched a complete game, allowing nine runs, but only three earned, while striking out one. Olison was charged with five wild pitches, which contributed to the Tigers’ offense.

In the nightcap, Kylie Wilson threw a no-hitter as Texas Southern won 1-0. Wilson retired 22 of 23 batters faced over seven innings, walking one and striking out two. The only run came in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Katelynn Cooper, who scored after a walk and bunt single by Marisa Perla.

Alcorn’s Chiara Olison pitched well in the second game, allowing one run on five hits over seven innings. Despite her effort, the Braves fell to 13-25 overall and 1-13 in the SWAC. Texas Southern improved to 22-10 and 11-6 in conference play. The teams will meet again Saturday at noon to conclude the series.
