Texas Southern Sweeps Baseball Series with Alcorn

HOUSTON — Tanner Marek drove in five runs, including a walk-off, run-rule grand slam in the seventh inning, as Texas Southern defeated Alcorn 18-5 Sunday at MacGregor Park. The Tigers won the rubber game of their Southwestern Athletic Conference series.

Marek, the team’s third baseman, went 3-for-5 with three runs scored. His grand slam capped a six-run seventh inning that ended the game early under the run-rule. Jonathan Trejo added a two-run homer in the fifth, his third of the season, to help push Texas Southern’s lead to 12-3. Trejo finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

Anthony Ruiz contributed two hits, three RBIs, and stole two bases. Marco Mueses went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, including a two-run double in the second inning. Texas Southern starter Justin Mays improved to 5-1 after working 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.

Alcorn took an early lead when pitcher Kanious Davis tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. The Braves tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth with a two-run homer by Cooper Harris, his third of the season. Harris finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two walks.

The Tigers responded with a run in the fourth on an RBI double by Ruiz and a scoring error, then exploded for seven runs in the fifth, highlighted by Marek’s RBI single, a bases-loaded walk, and Trejo’s grand slam. Alcorn added two runs in the seventh but could not mount a comeback. Davis took the loss for Alcorn, falling to 3-2 after allowing six runs in four innings.

Alcorn remains in Texas for a midweek game against Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday, April 15, at 3 p.m. in Nacogdoches.
