Texas Southern edges Alcorn State 72-71 in close SWAC game

Alcorn State men’s basketball fell short Saturday, losing 72-71 to Texas Southern in a close SWAC game at the Davey L. Whitney Complex in Lorman, Mississippi.

The contest was highly competitive, with 13 lead changes and 14 ties. Neither team managed to establish a significant lead, and Alcorn State briefly took a one-point lead late before Texas Southern secured the win at the free-throw line.

Davian Williams led the Braves with 15 points, including three three-pointers, and provided consistent scoring in the second half. Shane Lancaster contributed 14 points and four assists, making key free throws down the stretch. Tycen McDaniels and Omari Hamilton added 11 points each; McDaniels also posted six rebounds and strong defense, while Hamilton provided interior presence on both ends.

Jameel Morris scored six points and dished four assists, and Nick Woodard added five points and two blocks. Texas Southern’s Bryce Roberts scored a game-high 20 points, with several clutch baskets late. Alex Anderson scored 19 points, including the game-winning free throws at the final buzzer. Troy Hupstead finished with 16 points and seven rebounds.

Alcorn State shot 42.3% from the field and was 21-of-23 at the free-throw line, outscoring Texas Southern 39–38 in the second half and holding a 20–12 edge in bench points. The Tigers’ 33 free throws were decisive in the one-point victory.

The Braves return to action Monday, Jan. 19, hosting Prairie View A&M at 2 p.m. at the Whitney Complex for a Martin Luther King Jr. holiday matinee.
