Spring Hill Sweeps Delta State in Season Opener Doubleheader
Mobile, Alabama — Delta State softball opened its 2026 season Saturday with a doubleheader at Spring Hill College, losing both games. The Lady Statesmen led early in each contest but were overwhelmed by the Badgers’ offense.
In the first game, Delta State scored four runs in the top of the first inning, fueled by four hits and aggressive baserunning. Mackenzie Mills hit a two-run single, and Mary Teague stole two bases, including home. Calli McConnell, Joryie McKnight, and Kyleigh Wheaton each had multi-hit efforts as DSU totaled 10 hits.
Spring Hill responded immediately with four runs in the bottom half and erupted for seven more in the fourth inning. Meredith Fontenot led the Badgers with a 3-for-4 performance and five RBIs, including a two-run homer. Wheaton added a sacrifice fly for Delta State, but Spring Hill’s late surge sealed the win, 13–5, in five innings.
The Lady Statesmen again scored first in the second game, with Wheaton driving in the initial run after reaching on a strikeout-wild pitch and stealing second and third. Spring Hill answered with three runs in the first and broke the game open with a five-run third inning, part of a 19-hit team effort.
Jenna Curry pitched a complete game for Spring Hill, allowing just one run and four hits. Delta State’s offense was limited to two hits, with Wheaton driving in a run and Ally Agner adding a single in the second inning. The Badgers secured a 9–1 victory in five innings.
Across the doubleheader, Wheaton finished with three hits and two RBIs, while McKnight stole three bases. Delta State, now 0–7, will travel to Memphis next week for a doubleheader against LeMoyne-Owen College at 11 a.m., as they continue their early-season road stretch.
