Southwest Mississippi Women’s Basketball Falls to Northwest Rangers

Southwest Mississippi Women’s Basketball suffered a 59-45 loss to the Northwest Rangers at home on February 16, according to team sources.

The Lady Bears led early in the first quarter, taking a 17-10 advantage with a three-pointer and seven points from Mady Smith. A last-second basket by the Rangers trimmed the lead to 17-13 at the end of the quarter.

Offensively, Southwest struggled in the second quarter, scoring only two points on free throws by Gracie Miller. The Rangers extended their lead to 30-19 by halftime. The Lady Bears continued to face offensive challenges in the third quarter, adding just eight points, with six from Kayla Arterberry, and trailed 47-27 entering the final quarter.

Early in the fourth, a Ranger basket put Southwest down by 22 points. The Lady Bears then staged a rally, going on an 18-2 run over six minutes. Gracie Miller started the run with a three-pointer and scored seven points during the stretch. Mercedes Dorsey added six points to the rally. Despite the surge, the Rangers regained momentum, and the game ended with Southwest losing 59-45.

Arterberry led the team with 14 points, while Miller scored 13. The Lady Bears, now 7-16 overall and 3-7 in conference, will play on the road Thursday against Co-Lin, according to team officials.
