Southwest Mississippi Women’s Basketball Beats Holmes Community College

Southwest Mississippi’s women’s basketball team defeated Holmes Community College 55-47 in a home game Monday. The Lady Bears fell behind early, trailing 2-13 in the first eight minutes.

Head coach Brent Harris called a timeout, prompting a rally that saw Southwest go on a 10-0 run and cut the deficit to 12-13 with eight minutes remaining in the half. The team maintained momentum, taking a 25-18 lead into halftime after a three-pointer from Gracie Miller.

Miller continued her strong play early in the third quarter, hitting a three-pointer just 16 seconds into the period and helping extend the lead. The game remained competitive, with the score tied 37-37 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Miller opened with another three-pointer to give Southwest the lead. The Lady Bears retook control with 8:50 remaining, going on an 11-0 run to push their lead to 48-37. Miller’s final three-pointer with 1:20 left sealed the win for Southwest.

Miller led all scorers with 14 points, including four three-pointers. Shanell Celestine added 10 points for the Lady Bears, who improved to 6-12 overall and 2-3 in conference play. Coach Harris expressed pride in his team’s resilience, saying, “Just proud. Proud of us that we fought through some tough situations and came back from behind early.”

Southwest Mississippi will visit Itawamba Community College on Thursday for a game that could even their conference record at 3-3.
