Southwest Mississippi Softball Sweeps No. 17 Hinds in Doubleheader

Southwest Mississippi softball hosted Hinds on Wednesday, April 1, for a doubleheader. The Lady Bears won the first game 4-0 and lost the second 7-2.

Allie Ladnier pitched all seven innings in the opener, allowing no runs or walks and striking out six. Southwest scored all four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Corin Talbot hit a solo homer to start the scoring, followed by a two-run homer from Kate Clements. A bases-loaded walk added the final run of the inning. Neither team scored after that.

Talbot, Clements, Tristan Allen, Alexis Dejean, and Jana Phillips each had one hit. Clements drove in two RBIs, while Talbot and Madalyn Ashford each had one. Lauryn Roebuck stole a base for Southwest in the first game.

In the second game, Corin Talbot started on the mound but only lasted 0.1 innings, taking the loss. Mary Claire Salley pitched the remaining 5.1 innings, allowing three hits and striking out two. Southwest managed only two hits and scored two runs. Bailey McLin scored first on an Alexis Dejean fielder’s choice, and Allie Ladnier drove in the second run with a single.

Coach Shea Johnson praised Ladnier’s performance, noting her strong outing in the circle. Johnson also emphasized the importance of continued improvement and not becoming complacent as the season progresses. He highlighted the significance of earning a ranked win in the MACCC and expressed excitement about the team’s 10-4 conference record after 14 games.

The Lady Bears (23-7, 10-4 MACCC) are set to play Northwest in a doubleheader Friday in Senatobia.
