Southwest Mississippi Lady Bears fall to Mississippi Gulf Coast, 70-58

Southwest Mississippi’s women’s basketball team lost to Mississippi Gulf Coast 70-58 on January 20 at home. The Lady Bears struggled early, trailing 22-9 after the first quarter.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 37-20 at halftime. Southwest Mississippi narrowed the gap in the third quarter, outscoring Gulf Coast 16-14, but still trailed 51-36 entering the final period.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bears mounted a rally, with Mercedes Dorsey scoring nine consecutive points. Despite the effort, the early deficit was too large to overcome. Dorsey led the team with 15 points, while Gracie Miller added 12.

The team shot 15-for-24 from the free-throw line. With the loss, Southwest Mississippi moved to 5-10 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Lady Bears will travel to Decatur on Thursday to face East Central Community College.
