Southwest Mississippi Baseball Sweeps No. 24 Gulf Coast in Doubleheader

Southwest Mississippi Baseball hosted the No. 24 Gulf Coast Bulldogs on Wednesday in a doubleheader, earning wins of 12-2 and 5-0. The Bears dominated both games, with strong pitching and timely hitting throughout the day.

In game one, Matt Newman started on the mound for Southwest and pitched five innings, striking out five and allowing only one run to earn the win. Easton Boyte finished the game with two scoreless innings, striking out one. Southwest took an early lead, scoring five runs through the first five innings. Key hits included singles by Tanner Moore, Jonathan Miller, and Robbie Hokamp, with Moore, Tumminello, and Miller each driving in two RBIs.

The Bears broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring seven runs with a combination of singles, walks, and sacrifice flies. Tristain Haynes and Tanner Moore each had two at-bats in the inning. Southwest secured the run rule victory in the seventh, with Boyte closing out the game by retiring three straight batters. Moore and Tumminello led the team with three hits each.

In game two, Rhyson Carroway pitched 3.2 scoreless innings to earn the win. Nik Carney finished with 2.1 innings, striking out four, and Dom Smith pitched the final inning, striking out two. The Bears scored three runs in the second inning on a bases-clearing double by Moore and added two more in the third after an error on a dropped third strike allowed Justin Domiano and Robbie Hokamp to score. Southwest kept Gulf Coast scoreless to secure a 5-0 victory.

Moore and Hayes Loper each had two hits in the second game, with Moore driving in three RBIs. Tristain Haynes stole a base. Southwest’s coach, Jack Edmonson, praised his team’s effort, saying, “We knew that yesterday was a big day for us, and we showed up and played really well. I thought we handled our emotions well and competed on a high level in all facets of the game.” The Bears are 26-16 overall and 10-8 in conference play. They have the weekend off before traveling to Decatur on April 14 to face East Central in a doubleheader.
