Southwest Mississippi Baseball sweeps Holmes, earns Coach Edmonson’s 100th win

Southwest Mississippi Baseball swept a doubleheader against Holmes on Saturday, winning 6-2 and 14-5. The Bears led throughout both games, extending their winning streak in the series.

In the first game, Matt Newman pitched seven innings, allowing two hits and no runs while striking out four. Newman earned the win, with relief appearances from Wyatt Garrett and Nik Carney. Carney finished the game, recording four strikeouts in two innings and earning the save.

Southwest scored early and often, taking a 5-0 lead through seven innings. Key hits included a single by Drew Swan that scored Tanner Moore and Tristain Haynes in the third inning, and Moore’s singles in the fourth and sixth innings that drove in runs. Tanner Moore also scored on an error in the eighth, sealing the win.

Moore had a standout performance, going 4-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Six other Bears contributed one hit each, including Hayes Loper, who tripled, and Justin Domiano, who stole a base.

The second game featured a dominant offensive display, with Southwest winning 14-5. Alden Spencer started and earned the win, pitching 4.2 innings with three strikeouts. Dom Smith pitched 1.1 innings, and Easton Boyte closed the game, each recording strikeouts.

The Bears scored five runs in the first inning and added three in the fourth and six in the sixth. Multiple players contributed offensively, with Tanner Moore, JD Hidalgo, and Tristain Haynes each recording two hits. Hidalgo and Johnathan Miller also had doubles, while Hidalgo, Domiano, and others stole bases and scored multiple runs.

Head coach Jack Edmonson celebrated the team’s effort, noting the positive response after a challenging week. The doubleheader victory also marked Edmonson’s 100th career win, a milestone he attributed to his faith, family, players, and staff.

The Bears now hold a 20-11 record and are 4-4 in conference play. They are scheduled to host Baton Rouge Community College on Monday for Sophomore Night.
