Southwest Mississippi Baseball splits doubleheader with Northwest

Southwest Mississippi Baseball hosted Northwest on Friday, April 3, for a doubleheader. The Bears lost the first game 4-1 but won the second 9-3, according to team sources.

In game one, Matt Newman started on the mound for Southwest. He pitched 4.2 innings, recording one strikeout and allowing two runs. Newman took the loss. Andrew Hoff pitched 1.2 innings with two strikeouts and one run allowed. Luke Simmons relieved for 0.2 innings before Easton Boyte finished with two innings, four strikeouts and one run allowed.

Offensively, Tanner Moore, Justin Domiano, Drew Swan, and Jonathan Miller each had one hit in game one. Several players stole bases, including Domiano twice, along with Landon French, Luke Simmons, and Tristain Haynes.

In game two, Alden Spencer started on the mound and pitched 1.2 innings, earning the win. Nik Carney followed with 4.2 innings, striking out seven and allowing one hit. Dom Smith finished with one inning, two strikeouts, and one hit allowed.

At the plate, Tanner Moore ignited the offense with a solo home run on the second pitch of the game. Southwest added two more runs in the first inning on singles from Sam Tumminello and Jonathan Miller. The Bears scored three additional runs in the second inning, highlighted by singles from Hayes Loper and Robbie Hokamp, pushing their lead to 6-2. They sealed the game with three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, including RBI singles from Loper and Hokamp. Smith closed the game with a two-strikeout performance in the top of the seventh.

Robbie Hokamp led the team with three hits, and he also had two doubles. Hayes Loper and Hokamp each drove in three RBIs. Moore’s homer was his only hit of the game. Several players, including Loper, Miller, Haynes, and Moore, stole bases in game two.

The Bears, now 24-16 overall and 8-8 in conference, are scheduled to host Mississippi Gulf Coast in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 8.
